Berlin, 9th September 2025 – Maon begins the research project VAELUES: Electricity Supply Security Analysis Considering Technical and Socio-Economic Aspects. Together with the FCN-ESE and IAEW at RWTH Aachen University, and the startup volatile, Maon is embarking on a two-year research collaboration. The project is supported by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy (BMWE) within the 8th Energy Research Programme.
The aim of VAELUES is to address the growing challenge of maintaining adequate and secured capacity in Germany’s power system. In this context, evaluating the resource adequacy is becoming increasingly important. From a technical perspective, resource adequacy refers to the ability of available system resources to meet the electricity demand. From a socioeconomic perspective, meeting the total demand with available resources may be technically feasible, but it may not be considered desirable if the resulting prices exceed consumers’ ability or willingness to pay. VAELUES tackles this challenge by bringing together a consortium of academic and industry partners to develop and integrate models from both technical and socioeconomic perspectives, enabling a comprehensive assessment of resource adequacy.
This collaborative effort will bring together expertise in system modelling, socio-economic evaluation, and methodological innovation to establish an integrated approach for assessing the security of electricity supply.
